About EarAid Hearing Centre
Tarek El Rifai, H.I.S, Reg. AHIP founded EarAid Hearing Centre in September 2019. It was just a few months before the COVID pandemic devastated the nation and the world. “It was hard for me at the time to find the real purpose of getting up every day. I helped a few people with their hearing problems and the response was very positive,” El Rifai said. “Since the clinic has become busy, however I still consider it to be very much in the startup phase in the sense of a business.”
El Rifai said he feels he has had success with his business, and a positive reception from new customers, however, he said, that doesn’t make him feel that he has the business figured out. “How would you even describe successful? It’s very subjective,” he said. “If I couldn’t do it 110 per cent, I wouldn’t do it at all. And that’s just how I am. I’m like that with everything I do in life. I’m either going to do it or not do it, and hearing aids I’m doing.”
The EarAid Hearing Centre was recently named the Reader’s Choice winner, and if he needed to find a reason, El Rifai said it would be because they are not just a hearing aid company. They are a part of a community, and a community themselves with their customers. “I want my patients to feel excited and toked about their hearing devices like I feel when I find a newly released hearing aid product. My goal is not to make money but to give my patients the tools they need for a better quality of life.” - Toronto Star newspaper.

About the Business Owner
Tarek El Rifai’s connection to hearing care began long before he entered the profession. Growing up in Germany, he watched his mother live with hearing loss following reconstructive surgery for a damaged eardrum. Her experience introduced him to hearing aids at an early age and gave Tarek a personal understanding of how profoundly hearing can affect everyday life, relationships and confidence.
When Tarek began his career in hearing care in 2015, he quickly discovered that his personal connection to hearing loss was only one part of what would shape his approach to the profession. While working for a large corporate hearing-aid provider in Newfoundland, he met many people who could benefit from hearing aids but struggled with the cost. He also saw firsthand how limited competition could leave consumers with fewer choices and little influence over the prices they paid.
The experience stayed with him. Tarek believed people shouldn't have to compromise on the quality of their hearing care simply because they couldn't afford the prices being offered. He began to envision a different approach, one where patients could access high-quality technology, receive honest professional advice, and make decisions based on what was right for their individual needs rather than feeling pressured into a particular solution.
That philosophy has remained central to Tarek's approach ever since. When recommending hearing aids, he takes the time to understand each patient's hearing challenges, lifestyle, priorities, and budget before proceeding with potential solutions. Most importantly, he believes patients should have the freedom to make their own decisions. Sometimes the right choice is to move forward with hearing aids; sometimes it is to explore other options or take more time. His role, as he sees it, is to provide the expertise and information patients need to make a decision they feel confident about.
